The Salton Sea is a man made lake in CA. It is created by the drainage of agricultural irrigation. California
in the 1920s siphoned off water from the great west and diverted it to irrigate CA crops. This water needed a
place to drain and the Salton Sea was that place. The Salton Sea is the biggest man made lake in the world.
When the Salton Sea formed it was before wide spread pesticide use. The water was clean and became a huge refuge
for birds on migrations. It also became a massive vacation attraction in CA and people set up hotels and towns around the sea.
The Rat Pack would spend time at the Salton Sea and gambling was legal out in the desert.
Over time CA's agricultural practices changed and the water became contaminated with pesticides. They say the sea became too
salty for the fish, but really it's the pesticides that killed the fish and also destroyed the Salton Sea as a bird sanctuary.
By the mid 1970s the water was becoming really bad and the tourist scene had dried up.
A hurricane came in
1976 and aftewards people didn't bother rebuilding the hotels because the Sea had become more and more pollluted and the vacationers were
no longer coming to the Salton Sea.
The decay of the Salton Sea shows us how much agriculture has changed in America. Just as the sea is full of poison now,
our foods our full of poison. The same stuff that killed all the fish, will kill us as well.
